Test Your Mold With These Mold Kits

Mold testing is a complicated subject that varies from one situation to the next. You can find a page that covers the basics and methods of mold testing on my website.

You now know why and when to test for mold. Let’s move on to the DIY mold testing kits.

You can also refer to home mold tests as a black mold testing kit, a mold detection tool, or a Petri test. They all use the same testing method and are one-in-the-same.

Types of Home Mold Test kits

Method 1 is a mold test in a petri dish.

The user places the open Petri dishes in a place for a specified time (known to settle sampling), and then the petri dish allows it to grow whatever has fallen on it. A chart should be included with the mold test. It will show you the different types of mold that could grow on the Petri dishes. This will allow you to determine if mold is growing in the area.

This method has two limitations. Second, mold spores in the air can grow second by second. You won’t be able to see what is happening in your home. You don’t know what kind of mold is growing in your home, as many molds have the same texture and color.

You can also send your Petri dishes to a laboratory for analysis. They will email you a report detailing what type of mold was present on the dish. Although you may not be able to see all the spores at once, it will give you an idea of what types of mold might be present in your home.

To make the petri dish method even half-effective, it is essential that you have a test plate in each room.

You can also use these Petri dishes to do surface mold sampling. A swab is used to collect a sample from any visible mold. Next, transfer the contents of your swab to the petri dish. The same process is used for the analysis.

Method 2 is a tape lifting type of test.

This tape is most useful when there is visible mold inspection and testing. The tape is placed on the mold growth and sealed.

Tape-lift mold tests can be used for lifting material from any area in the hopes that mold spores end up on the tape. This is possible, but it comes with limitations.

Where can I buy a mold test kit?

It all depends on which home mold test kit you use. There are many options available on Amazon and at Lowes or Home Depot. You can also find other kits at certain online retailers.

Do DIY Mold Test Kits work?

They are effective, but they don’t give any useful information and can be a waste of time. The ERMI mold test, as you can see on my Mold Testing page is a better DIY type of mold test that is also used by professionals.

These test kits will not help you find the source of the problem. A DIY mold test kit may be able to detect mold in your home but it won’t tell you how serious. It is still necessary to determine where mold is growing, how large it is, and why.

A professional mold inspection is the best. To complete any mold test, you need a visual component.

The home mold testing kits below are an affordable and popular way to determine if there is a mold problem.

To help you make the best choice for your home mold test kit, here are my top picks.

Five-Minute Mold Test at Healthful Home

This test is my favorite. This test provides the fastest results anywhere. Your mold test results will be ready in just five minutes, as implied by the name. Is that possible?

To detect mold, this kit includes a swab with two collection trays. You can begin testing for mold by wiping the swab on dust (which is not possible with other home mold tests), or visible mold. Then, secure the cap. You need to break the cap, which releases liquid on top of the sample. The test will show you if the liquid has detected mold by placing five drops in the tray.

One of the two collection trays can be used to detect “black mold.” A negative reading on the test doesn’t necessarily mean that mold isn’t growing in your home.

  • It’s easy to use, just three steps
  • It is the only patent-pending technology on the market that can detect molds.
